RAMALLAH, October 15, 2008 (AFP) - A Palestinian teenager was killed and another wounded by gunfire from Israeli troops near the West Bank city of Ramallah, medics said. Abdel Kader Zeid, 17, died after being shot in the chest outside the Beit-El Jewish settelement on Tuesday, the sources said. The Israeli military said soldiers had opened fire at a man who was brandishing a petrol bomb.

"Petrol bombs were later found at the spot," an army spokeswoman said.

"Over the past days, petrol bombs have been thrown at Beit-El and the soldiers led an ambush to catch the perpetrators," she said.

The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal and Palestinians claim continued settlement constructions constitute a major hurdle in efforts to reach a peace agreement with Israel.

At least 535 people have been killed since Israel and the Palestinians formally relaunched US-backed peace talks in November, the vast majority of them Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip, according to an AFP count.
